Okul öncesi dönem; gelişimin en hızlı olduğu, kişiliğin temellerinin atıldığı, çocuğun yakın çevresinden en çok etkilendiği ve her türlü öğrenmeye açık olduğu, bir dönemi içerir. Okul öncesi eğitimin amacı çocuğun gelişim özeliklerine uygun olmalıdır. Bunun yanında uygun bir eğitim sistemi ve bu eğitim sistemine uygun sağlıklı bir çevre ile çocuğun gelişimi sağlamalıdır. Okul öncesi dönem olarak tanımlanan 0-72 ay dönemi çocuğun bilişsel, duygusal, sosyal ve psiko-motor gelişimleri açısından kritik bir öneme sahiptir. Yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda okul öncesi eğitimi alan çocukların ileriki yıllarında ve okul hayatlarında daha başarılı oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Okul öncesi dönemde, eğitim gereksinimleri doğru biçimde karşılanmayan çocukların daha sonraki dönemlere sağlıklı bireyler olarak ulaşmaları çok güç olmaktadır. Bu yüzden de okul öncesi eğitimin yaygınlaştırılması oldukça önemlidir.

The preschool period includes a time when the development is the fastest, the fundamentals of the personality are created, the child is affected from his environment at a great deal and he is open to all kinds of learning. The aim of the pre-school education must be suitable with the development characterization of the children. Nearby, the development must be provided with a suitable education system and a healthy education environment. The period of 0–72 months described as preschooling has a critical significance in terms of cognitive, emotional, social and psychomotor developments. It was found in various studies that children having a preschool education are more successful in the following years and in their school lives. It is hard for the children who are not able to meet their educational needs in the preschool period to reach following terms as healthy individuals. Therefore, it is very important to promote pre-school education.
