Eğitim ve öğretimin sosyal içeriği teknolojik gelişmeler, modern sonrası toplumsal şartlar, çevresel değişimler ve küreselleşmenin etkisiyle devamlı olarak değişmektedir. Bu çalışmada böylesi bir dünyaya etkin vatandaşlar yetiştirmede coğrafya eğitiminin rolü nispeten felsefi açıdan ve makro
ölçekte ele alınmıştır. Coğrafya eğitiminin temelinde öğrencilerin mekânı doğru şekilde kavramsallaştırmaları ve buna bağlı olarak da doğru mekânsal kararlar vermeleri yatar. Bu sebepten coğrafya eğitiminin temel konteksi mekân ve mekânın farklı boyutları olmalıdır. Çalışmada aynı zamanda coğrafya eğitiminin şu konteksler çerçevesinde ele
alınması gerektiği tartışılmıştır: Bilgi ve iletişim teknolojileri, çevresel duyarlık ve sürdürülebilirlik, toplumsal değişimler ve küreselleşme ile beceriler.

The social context of education and teaching has been changing because of the effects of technological developments, post-modern social conditions, environmental change and globalisation. In this study, the role of geography education in the education of active citizens in such a world is addressed from a relatively philosophical perspective and through macro scale. The purpose of teaching geography is to enable students to conceptualise the dimension of space and to make right spatial decisions. For this reason the main context of geography education should be space and different dimensions of space. Geography education should also be contextualised under the following contexts: Use of information and communication technologies, environmental sensitivity and sustainability, social changes and globalisation and skills.
