Modernite, Batının kendi tecrübeleriyle ekonomik, sosyal, kültürel ve siyasal alanda yaşadığı, Batı dışı toplumlarında öykünerek gerçekleştirmeye çalıştığı değişimleri ifade eder. Felsefi altyapısını Aydınlanma döneminde oluşturan modernite, gelenek ile tam bir karşıtlık içerisinde aklı ve insanı merkeze alarak, toplumsal yaşamı rasyonalize eder. Din, toplumsal yaşamda geriletilerek, laiklik ve insanın özgürleşmesi ilkeleştirilir. Bu makale, modernite kavramının neyi ifade ettiğini ve moderniteyi oluşturan süreçleri ortaya koymaya çalışan genel kapsamlı bir çalışmadır.

Modernity refers to the changes that the West has undergone in economic, social, cultural, and political fields through its own experiences and those which it strives to realize in non-Western societies. Modernity shaped its philosophical infrastructure during the Age of Enlightment rationalizes the social life by opposing the tradition and placing the mind and man at the centre. It attaches the religion less importance and adots the principles of secularism and freedom of man. This paper is a comprehensive study which aims to reveal what the concept of modernity refers to and the periods which have made up the modernity.
