Batı olarak ifade ettiğimiz gelişmiş toplumlar, söz konusu “gelişmiş” payesini elde ederken uzun ve sıkıntılı bir süreçten geçmiştir. Kendilerine göre daha alt seviyede bulunan toplumların dillerine pelesenk olacak Batılaşma-Batılılaşma-Modernleşme-Çağdaşlaşma olgusunu kendi içlerinde sancılı bir biçimde yaşayarak meydana getirmişlerdir. Başka bir deyişle, 19 ve 20. yüzyılın portresi 13 ve 14. yüzyıllardan itibaren çizilmeye başlanmıştır. Sadece 19 ve 20.yüzyıla bakmak resmi anlamak ve yorumlamak için yeterli değildir. Dolayısıyla meselenin kırılma noktalarına bakmak gerekir.
Bu düşünceden hareketle yazıda, Batı’da, aklı ve ilmi merkezine alarak insanını kiliseden, ruhban sınıfından, feodaliteden, eski düzenden kurtaran süreç Rönesans, Aydınlanma, Fransız İhtilali ve Sanayi Devrimi çizgisinde değerlendirilmektedir.

The developed countries, also known as the West, reaching the rank, “developed”, they get through a long and grueling process. The developed countries brought forth the phenomenon of westernization-modernization, and passed it on to incessant use in societies who were “relatively “ less developed. In other words, the portrait of the 19th and 20th centuries had been drawn since the 13th and 14th centuries. Only looking at the 19th and 20th centuries is not enough to understand and evaluate the picture. So the breaking points of the problem must be investigated. From this point of view, in this article the process of emancipating people from the church, clergy, feudalism and ancien régime by means of centering the reason and science will be discussed on the basis of the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.
