XVI. yüzyılda Osmanlı coğrafyasının gerek nüfus gerekse ekonomik açıdan bir genişleme
ve değişme süreci yaşadığı bilinen bir gerçektir. Bu süreç sadece coğrafyanın kırsal kesimini
etkilememiş, kentleri de etkisi altına almıştır. Bu makalede söz konusu varsayımdan hareketle
kent monografilerinden ve dönemin arşiv belgelerinden de istifade edilerek, XVI.yüzyıl Osmanlı
kentlerinin ekonomik nitelikleri üzerine bir karşılaştırma denemesine gidilmiştir. Bunun için
sondaj metodu ile hem nüfus hem de ekonomik açıdan bir Osmanlı kentini temsil edebilme
niteliğine sahip olan kentler seçilmiş ve bu kentlerin ekonomik açıdan sahip oldukları
kazanımlar karşılaştırmalı olarak sunulmuştur. Bu sayede Osmanlı kent tipolojisinin ekonomik
parametreleri belirlenmeye; bu yerleşim yerlerinin ticaret, tarım ve sanayi sektörü açısından
sahip oldukları nitelikler ortaya konulmaya, kent yaşamının dinamik öğeleri gözler önüne
serilmeye çalışılmıştır.

It is an obvious fact that in the 16th century, the Ottoman geography experienced a process of
expansion and transformation both in terms of economic and population. This process affected
not only the geography of countryside but also penetrated into cities. In this article, depending
on the mentioned thesis, a comparative essay is made on economic qualities of the 16th century
Ottoman cities by exploiting the archival files of the period and the city monographs. For this
purpose, with drilling method, cities are selected which have the necessary characteristics
to represent an Ottoman city in respect of both economic and population, and economical
achievements that these cities possess are presented comparatively. Thus, in the paper, it is
attempted to determine economic parameters of the Ottoman city typology; to put forward the
commercial, agricultural and industrial characteristics that these cities possess; to display
dynamic elements of city.
