Turkish lesson is the most basic step in which language development process is placed on formal
education in line with acquisitions established, from reading-writing training process to the last class
of secondary school. In this process, it is an unquestionable fact that Turkish textbook is the most
leading material in bringing and development of four basic language skills. Even if Turkish
textbooks are prepared according to constructivist approach taken as a basis in education programs
in our country, when acquisitions which are targeted to access are taken into consideration, it was
revealed in many studies that textbooks have different problems in instructional aspect. One of the
important instructional features of textbooks is illustrations used together with texts. In this study,
texts and illustrations in elementary school 1st Class Turkish textbook belonging to Zambak Press
were examined in terms of image-text relation. In the research that is a descriptive study, document
review method was used. Number of illustration used in text, positioning form of illustrations in
text, colors used and relativity of colors to child were evaluated according to image-illustration
relation categories. Adequate image-text relation was found only in 18 of 56 illustrations examined in
the study. 26 of illustrations are not adequate in terms of image-text relation. It was found that
relation is partially adequate in 12 of illustrations.
