Medenileşmek, Tanzimat Dönemi’nden itibaren devletin ve sosyal kurumların geri
kalmışlığına çözüm önerisi olarak sunulmuştur. Ancak medeniyet kavramına
yüklenen farklı anlamlar, bu kelimenin doğru anlaşılıp anlaşılmadığı konusunda
ciddi tereddütler içerir. Bir kurtuluş projesi olarak medenileşmek, medeni olmak
çoğu zaman modenizm ile eş anlamda kullanılmış ve Batılılaşmanın sosyal planda
yaygınlaşmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Özellikle II. Meşrutiyet’le birlikte
medenileşmek Batılılaşmakla eş anlamlıdır. Bu çalışmada, medeniyet kavramına
Türk düşünce tarihinde yüklenen farklı anlamlara bağlı olarak Tevfik Fikret’in
nasıl yaklaştığı incelenecektir. Promete şiirinden yola çıkılarak Fikret’in medeniyet
algısının değerlendirilmesinde gerçekleştirilmek istenen şey, Meşrutiyet Dönemi
aydınının medenileşme zihniyetine kısmen de olsa ayna tutmaktır.

To become civilized was introduced as a solution of underdevelopment of the state
and the social instutions since “Reform Era.” But, different meanings attributed to
the concept of civilisation; includes serious hesitations on whether this word is
properly understood or not. To become civilised, to become modern as a rescue
project, often used as synonyms with modernism and served as a basis for
becoming westernized become widespread on social plan. Especially with the
Constitutional Monarch the second becoming modern was synonyms with
becoming westernized. In this work, how Tevfik Fikret approached the concept of
civilisation related to the different meanings attributed to it in the history of Turkish Intellectual . What is desired to accomplish in the evaluation of the Fikret’s
perception of civilisation setting out from the poem of “Promete” is to hold a
mirror though partially, to the mentality of becoming civilized of the intellectuals
of constituonal Monarch Era.
