One of significant poets in the sixteenth century, Hakani Mehmed Bey's (?-
1598-9) understanding of poetry has been determined through what he said about
poetry m his Divan. The article consists of:
1. The source, aim and use of poetry
2. His ideas on his poems
3. Components of beauties for poetry and beloved
4. The words he used for and abaut poetry
5. Poets and personalities he compared himself
For him poetizing is innate. Poetry provides us with virtue, fame and
power, expressing our feelings and we can be forgiven by poetry; so poetry should
tell about the beauties of beloved. In Hakani's point of view, poetry should be
eloquent and rhetoric; poetry should have renovation and it should be excellent m
both form and content; it should be effective. He is the "sultan" of poets but neither
he nor other artists are appreciated.
Hakanı compared his poems with the components of beauties of the
beloved and he compared himself with many histoncal and legendary personalities;
he used many other words of terms for poetry and poet.
