Bir ulus-devlet modeli olarak karşımıza çıkan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kısa tarihinde musiki, toplumsal değişimin en net hissedildiği, kitlelerin birebir etkilendiği, üzerinde titizlikle durulması gereken bir kültür olgusudur. Yeni devletin kültürel modernleşme projesine görünürlük kazandıran Milli Musiki İnkılâbı, Batı çok sesliliği ve yerel ezgilerin sentezi olan Çağdaş Türk Müziği üzerine temellenmiştir. Bu süreçte zaman zaman yasaklamalara varan uygulamalara karşın, Türk toplumu kendisine dayatılan yeni kültür öğelerine belirgin bir tepki koymuş ve inandığı değerlere en yakın hissettiğini de cesaretle benimsemekten geri durmamıştır. Bu araştırmanın temel çerçevesini, Türkiye’de Batılılaşma ve ulus-devletin inşa sürecinde, ötelenen, dayatılan ve benimsenen müzik türlerinden oluşan ulusal müzik tarihinin çoğulcu ve karmaşık yapısına ilişkin, bilimsel, kültürel ve sosyolojik değerlendirmeler oluşturmaktadır.

In the short history of the Turkish Republic, arising as a nation-state, music appears as a rigorously researchable cultural phenomenon in which the communal transformation has precisely been perceived, with a strong one to one influence on communities. The National Music Revolution, which made the cultural modernization project of the new state tangible, was based upon the Contemporary Turkish Music, a synthesis of the western polyphony and the traditional melodies. Despite the suppressing implementations that at times went so far as to forbid certain applications in this process, the Turkish community has definitely reacted to the newly introduced cultural values but has bravely accepted the values close to ones the community already agreed. The main frame of the research consists of scientific, cultural and sociological assessments in consideration with the complicated, pluralist nature of the history of the national music, including various kinds which were overlooked, imposed or welcomed in the process of the westernization in Turkey and the foundation of the nation-state identity.
