Pekin Olimpiyat Komitesi (Beijing Olympics Committee-BOCOG) 2008 Yaz Olimpiyatları için “yeşil olimpiyat” sloganıyla birtakım çevresel hedefler belirlemiştir. Bu hedefler, çevresel sürdürülebilirliği destekleyen ekolojik ölçütlerdir. Pekin, hazırladığı öneri planıyla, Uluslararası Olimpiyat Komitesi (International Olympic Committee-IOC) tarafından ev sahibi seçilmiştir. Bundan sonraki süreçte, çevresel ilkelere bağlı kalınmaya çalışılarak bir takım sürdürülebilir düzenlemeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmada Pekin tarafından belirlenen ve öneri planında yer alan çevresel ilkelere göre Pekin Olimpiyat Projesi’nin başarısı irdelenmiş ve Greenpeace ve Birleşmiş Milletler Çevre Programı (United Nations Environmental Program-UNEP) tarafından yapılan değerlendirme sonuçları verilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, Pekin en son gelişmeleri yansıtan enerji tasarrufu teknolojileri, yeni alt yapı sistemleri ve geri dönüşümün sağlanması gibi pek çok alanda önemli başarılar elde etmiştir. Bunun yanında ormanların korunması ve su tasarrufunun sağlanması gibi diğer önemli konularda ne yazık ki halkın bilinçlendirilmesi ve yeni politikaların oluşturulmasında olimpiyatların sağladığı avantajlardan yeterince yararlanamamıştır.

The Beijing Olympics Committee (BOCOG) in their planning phase specified some environmental guidelines with the goal of creating “a green olympics” for the 2008 Summer games. These objectives support the ecological criteria of environmental sustainability. Thanks in part to this foresight it was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the games. After obtaining the Olympic bid Beijing made an effort to follow and enact many of these environmental guidelines. In this study, the successes of the Beijing’s efforts have been analyzed in light of the environmental guidelines adopted. An environmental assessment report on the 2008 games was prepared by Greenpeace and the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) and forms the basis of this research.. In conclusion, Beijing was able to achieve progresses in many areas such as the state-of-the-art energy saving technologies, new infrastructure systems and recycling. It did not, however, take advantages of Olympic Games to promote environmental awareness among the general public and neglected to formulate new policies in areas such as forest protection and conservation of water resources.
