En öz tanımıyla “birbirine bağlı ve iç içe iki övgü unsurunun birlikte bulun-ması” demek olan istitbâ, metnin arka planını görmeyi amaçlayan bir okuyucu için derin anlamları keşfe açan bir bedî‘ terimidir. Muzâafe, medh-i muvecceh, idmâc, ta‘lîk, tekmîl ve te’kîdu’l-medh bimâ yuşbihu’z-zem sanatlarıyla ilişkili olan istitbâ‘ terimleşme sürecinde bu kavramlardan bazılarıyla eş anlamlı ola-rak kullanılmış, bazılarından da nüanslarla ayrılmıştır. Özellikle âyetlerin idmâc sanatı kapsamında değerlendirmesi, istitbâ‘ teriminin kullanımını öte-lemiştir. Bu anlamda istitbâ‘ sanatına dair Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’de az sayıda örnek bulunması, anlamsal iç içeliğin idmâc sanatına; sadece övgü unsurunun birlik-teliğinin ise istitbâ‘ sanatına hasredilmesi sebebiyledir.

With its self-definition, “ İstitba, which means co-existence of interconnecting and nests two praise elements, is a Bedi‘ term leading to discovery of deep meanings for a reader who aims to see background of the text. İstitbâ‘, which is related to arts of Muzâafe, medh-i muvecceh, idmâc, ta‘lîk, tekmîl and te’kîdu’l-medh bimâ yuşbihu’z-zem, is used with some of these concepts sy-nonymously and is seperated from some of them with nuances during the term’s creation period. Particularly, evaluation of the verses within the context of art of idmac postponed the use of the term, istitbâ‘. In this meaning, availa-bility of limited number of examples in Quran about art of istitbâ‘ is because of the fact that semantic nesting is devoted to the art of istitbâ‘; togetherness of praise element is because of the fact that it’s devoted to the art of istitbâ‘.
