Şevket Bulut, Cumhuriyet dönemi Türk hikâyesinin önemli isimlerinden olup Anadolu'yu ve Anadolu insanını
gerçekçi bir anlayışla nakleden yazarlarımızdan biridir. Şevket Bulut, Anadolu’nun zengin kültürünü eserlerinde
sade bir dil ve akıcı üslûpla anlatır. Bir “Anadolu hikâyecisi” olan Şevket Bulut, hikâyelerinde gelenek
görenekler, menkıbe, efsane, keramet, zenginlik, fakirlik, sevinç, hüzün, kadere razı olma, menfaatler, bilgelik
vb. konuları işler. O, Türk hikâyeciliği içerisinde Ömer Seyfettin mektebinin bir devamıdır.
Şevket Bulut mahallilikten hareket etmesine rağmen mahallilikte kalmayıp milli bir çizgiye ulaşır. Anlattığı
konular belirli bir yöreden çıkmış olmasına rağmen bütün Anadolu halkının yaşamını yansıtır.
Şevket Bulut, hikâyelerinde Türk toplumunun inançlarına geniş ölçüde yer verir. Bu inanç sisteminin merkezinde
İslâmiyet yer alır. Yazarın hikâyelerinde batıl inançlar ve dinin yanlış yorumlanmasından kaynaklanan
problemler de önemli yer tutar.
Şevket Bulut, bütün bu özellikleriyle milli, milliyetçi ve İslamcı bir çizgi takip eder. O, 1970 sonrası Türk
hikâyesinde milliyetçi ve muhafazakâr bir bakış açısına sahiptir.
