Hermann Hesse günümüzde hâlâ beğeniyle okunan Alman Edebiyatının en önemli yazarlarındandır. Yazar, farklı türde edebi eserleriyle dikkat çeker. Hesse’nin incelemiş olduğumuz Augustus adlı masalı yalnız çocuklara hitap etmekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda büyüklerin de kendilerine pay çıkarabilecekleri özellikler taşır. Hesse’nin Yabancı bir Gezegenden Tuhaf Haberler adlı kitabında yer alan Augustus Masalı annesi tarafından seslendirilmiş bir dilek sonucunda, tüm insanlar tarafından adeta tapılırcasına sevilip yüceltilen, tüm istekleri sevenleri tarafından yerine getirilen Augustus’un öyküsünü anlatılır. Augustus, çevresinde yaşadığı aşırı sevgi ve ilgi sonucu histerik olur; övülmekten çok yerilmeyi, sevilmekten çok yalnız bırakılmayı tercih eder. Kendisine gösterilen aşırı sevgi ve ilgiden sıkılan kahraman intiharı bile düşünür hale gelir. Masalın ikinci önemli başkahramanlarından Bay Biswanger Augustus’un yardımına koşar; böylece Augustus insanların ilgi ve sevgisinden arınıp normal bir insan olarak hayata devam eder. Bu çalışmada masal ve masal çeşitlerine değinilip Augustus’un hangi masal türüne ait olduğuna ve bu masalın özelliklerine yer verilecektir. Daha sonrasında ise Rus halkbilimci Vladimir Propp’un 31 maddeden oluşan masal inceleme ölçütlerine göre Augustus Masalı ele alınacaktır. Propp’un veri ve sembollerine göre karşılaştırılacaktır. Söz konusu masalın işlevselliği Propp’un Masalın Biçimbilimi metoduyla çözümlenecektir.

Hermann Hesse is one of the most important authors of German literature. The author draws attention by his different types of written works. His tale which is entitled “Augustus” does not appeal to kids alone; at the same time, it carries the characteristics which can benefit to the elders. Hesse’s “Augustus” tale which is included in his book Strange News from a Foreign Planet is about Augustus who is loved and enshrined by all people as a result of a wish voiced by his mother. Augustus becomes hysterical because of the extreme love and interest he experiences around him; but rather than being praised and loved, he preferred to be left alone. Because of the excessive interest and love over him, the hero even becomes suicidal. The other important hero of the tale, who is Mr. Binswanger, helps Augustus and he is purified from people’s interest and love and continues his life as a normal person. In this study, while the types of fables and fairy tales will be examined, the type of “Augustus” tale will be identified. Afterwards, the tale will be analysed according to the Russian folklorist Vladimir Propp’s 31 elements of tale analysis technique, and will be compared to his data and symbols. The functionality of the tale will be analysed by applying Propp’s method from Morphology of the Folktale.
