Ekonomik özgürlük kaynakların etkin kullanımına yol açtığı için sürdürülebilir kalkınma ile yakından ilgilidir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmanın amacı ekonomik özgürlüğün sürdürülebilir kalkınma üzerindeki etkisini analiz etmektir. Bu amaçla Türkiye ve Avrupa Birliği (AB) üyesi ülkeler için, 1990-2014 dönemini kapsayan veriler kullanılarak, Genelleştirilmiş En Küçük Kareler tahminleri elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen tahmin sonuçlarına göre söz konusu ülkelerde ekonomik özgürlük sürdürülebilir kalkınma üzerinde pozitif yönlü bir etkiye sahiptir. Buna göre Türkiye ve AB üyesi ülkelerde ekonomik özgürlük düzeyinin yükselmesi sürdürülebilir kalkınma düzeyinin de yükselmesine neden olmaktadır. Ekonomik özgürlük değişkeninin alt dallarından biri olan hukuksal yapı ise, sürdürülebilir kalkınma üzerindeki etkisi en yüksek olan ekonomik özgürlük alt dalıdır. Diğer yandan söz konusu ülkelerde, kamunun hesap verebilirlik düzeyi sürdürülebilir kalkınmayı pozitif yönlü etkiliyorken, ülkelerdeki dini inanışın çeşitliliği sürdürülebilir kalkınmayı negatif yönlü etkilemektedir.

As economic freedom enables the effective utilization of resources, it is closely related to sustainable development. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the effect of economic freedom on sustainable development. For this purpose, the data pertaining to the period between 1990 and 2014 were used to obtain Generalized Least Square estimations for Turkey and European Union (EU) member states. According to the estimations obtained for these countries, economic freedom has a positive effect on sustainable development. Accordingly, an increase in economic freedom in Turkey and EU member states also leads to an increase in the level of sustainable development. Legal structure, which is one of the sub-branches of the economic freedom variable, is the economic freedom sub-branch that has the most effect on sustainable development. On the other hand, while the public accountability level in such countries has a positive effect on sustainable development, the variety of religious beliefs in said countries has a negative effect on sustainable development.
