Ekonomik gelişme ile birlikte dünden bugüne değişen tutum ve davranışlar günümüz dünyasında bireylerin de faaliyetlerinde ve tüketim alışkanlıklarında köklü ve fark edilebilir değişimlere yol açmıştır. Yaşanan değişimlere bağlı olarak tüketen ile tüketilen arasındaki ilişki de ekonomik, sosyal, psikolojik, siyasal ve düşünsel gerçekler ve değerlerden etkilenir olmuştur. Tüketim faaliyetinin farklı ihtiyaçlardan kaynaklanır olması ve bireylere verdiği haz ve ayrıcalık duygusu da hem toplumda hem de literatürde yeni bir konsept olarak kabul görmeye başlamıştır. Sürdürülebilir tüketim yaklaşımı doğasına aykırı olmasına rağmen kitlelerce rağbet gören yeni tüketim biçimleri/süreçleri ve bunların sonuçları iktisatçıların yanı sıra, sosyologları, psikologları, politika yapıcıları ve daha birçok kesimin ilgisini çekmiştir. İnsanların mekanlara yükledikleri anlam zamanla mekanları tüketim yerlerine dönüştürerek, o yerlerin turizm sektörü aracılığıyla ürün olmasına yol açmıştır. Popüler mekanların koruma ve kullanma dengesi gözetilmeksizin tüketim ürünü ve tüketim yeri olarak vitrinde alıcı bulmasıyla süreç tamamlanır hale gelmiştir.
Çalışmada nitel veri toplama tekniklerinden derinlemesine mülakat yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bodrum/Türkbükü beldesinde uygulanan ve araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen derinlemesine görüşme formları ile yerleşiklerin dünden bugüne yaşanan değişimlerle ilgili gözlemleri ele alınmıştır. Yaşadıkları bölgede sosyo-ekonomik açıdan bölgenin kültürel değerlerinin yanı sıra; aidiyet, kullanım ve mülkiyet hakkı olanların tüketime farklı bakışları ele alınarak bölgede mekan tüketimi açısından koruma ve kullanma hakları ile ilgili durum tespiti yapılmıştır. Çalışmada popüler tüketimin turizm sektöründeki mekanlar üzerine olan etkileri ve o mekanlarda tüketim faaliyetini gerçekleştirenlerin bölgede bıraktıkları izlenimlerinin ele alınması açısından oldukça ilginç sonuçlar elde edilmiştir.

Attitudes and behaviours which have changed from past to today with economic development have caused radical and distinguished changes in individual’s activities and consumption habits in today’s world. Depending on the changes experienced, the relationship between the consumer and the consumed has also been affected with economic, social, psychological, political, and intellectual facts and values. A consumption activity being caused by different needs and the sense of delight and privilege it gives to the individuals have gained acceptance as a new concept both in the society and the literature. Even though they conflics with the nature of sustainable consumption approach new consumption styles/ processes and their consequences which are sought after by the population have drawn the attention of economists as well as sociologists, psychologists, policymakers and many others.
The meaning people attribute to the location has transformed them to locations of consumption and caused these places to become a product via tourism sector. The process was completed after these popular locations found a buyer in the market without considering the needs to balance conservation and utilization.
An in-depth interview, one of the qualitative data collection methods, was used in the study. The residents’ observations about the changes experienced from the past to today in Türkbükü/Bodrum were studied via in-depth interviews developed and administered in Bodrum / Türkbükü by the researchers. In addition to cultural values of the region from the socio-economic point of view, the ownership, usage and property rights of the residents with different perspectives towards consumption were studied and the situation related to the rights of retention and usage in the region with regard to location of consumption was determined. Very interesting results were obtained in the study in terms of discussing the effects of popular consumption on the locations in tourism sector and the impressions made by those who realized the consumption activity in these locations in the region.
