Eğitim öğretim süreci sadece öğretmenin anlattığı bilgiden ibaret değildir. İyi bir eğitici konuyu işlerken farklı materyaller ve kaynaklar kullanarak öğrencilerin geneline hitap edebilmelidir. Sosyal bilgiler dersi işlenirken tarih ve coğrafya konularının sadece okunarak işlenmesinin yeterli olmayacağı artık bilinmektedir. Bu sebeple öğretmenlerimiz çeşitli öğretim materyalleri kullanarak dersi zenginleştirebilmelidir. Bu durumdan hareketle, bu çalışmada tarih ve coğrafya konuları işlenirken öğretmenlerin materyal kullanımı ve materyallere erişebilme durumları değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma Adıyaman ili merkez ilçesinde görev yapmakta olan 190 sınıf ve sosyal bilgiler öğretmeni ile yapılmıştır. Yapılan çalışmada; materyal kullanımı konusunda öğretmenlerin istekli olduğu, ancak gerek materyal bulma konusunda eksiklikler olması, bilgi teknolojisi sınıflarının olmaması, zaman ve maddi olanağın olmaması gibi gerekçelerle materyal kullanma konusunda tam olarak istenilen düzeyde olmadıkları görülmüştür. Öğretmenlerin derslerde gerek tarih, gerekse coğrafya konuları olsun en çok kullandığı materyaller harita, fotoğraf ve resim olduğu görülmektedir.

Education is not only made up of the knowledge taught by the teacher but also using various teaching materials and different resources , which help teachers to arise most of the students’ interest, make the teaching activity more effective. It is a well known fact that only reading the history and geography subjects for the social science lessons isn’t efficient any more. Therefore it is a compulsory for teachers to enrich the teaching process by using a variety of materials. By taking this fact into consideration, teachers’ material usage and their accession to these materials were evaluated. This research was conducted on 190 classroom teachers and social science teachers working in Adıyaman. The reliability of the questionaire was assesed (Cronbach Alpha: 0,81). This study indicates that teachers are eager to use various materials during their teaching activity but deficiencies of materials, absence of technology classes at schools or shortage of time and opportunities, prevent teachers from using these materials in an effective way. This study shows that teachers generally use maps, photo and pictures as teaching materials while teaching history and geography subjects in their social science lessons
