The policy of England , from 1791 until 1878 , has been in favour of Ottoman
Empire to prevent Russia from being the greatest country in Europe . After Ottoman
Empire had lost its strength ; England changed its policy and began an opportunist attempt
to destroy Ottoman Empire and helped found some small countries that were in Otoman
land but would be in close relationship with England and also support English profit .
Therefore , England had occupied Cyprus in 1878 and Egypt in 1882 encouraged
Armenian and Kurdish people to establish their own countries , and Greeks to occupy
Western Anatolia.
At the beginning of 1921 , however , some different events in Anatolia and some
others caused England to change its policy. Among the reasons for this change can be
mentioned : Conservatives , Military and diplomatic authorities in England had increased
their criticism that if England goes on following the same policy Turkey might be
influenced by Bolshevik wave spreading around it by force ; In Greece , King Konstantine ,
who was advocating German policy , had reigned again ; and the Turkish National Struggle
for Independence had gained more and more strength. Believing that the National Struggle
of Turkey would be a success , England had tried to be in close relation ship with Mustafa
Kemal ,the founder of Turkish Republich and with the Republic which was still being
founded in the middle East.
