This study aimed to determine the eighth grade primary school students’ strategies used in
prediction math problems with measurement tools. The study was conducted with 221
eighth grade students from twenty state schools which were selected with stratified random
selection process among the state schools of an East Anatolian city of Turkey in the
academic year, 2011-2012. The data were collected with the ‚Operational and Measurable
Prediction Skill Test‛ including ten questions. The analysis showed that the students used
ten strategies about operational and measurable prediction skills. These strategies were
categorised as follow: rounding, grouping, operation according to first and last digits,
revision-correction, operation based on experience, mental operation, random prediction,
visualization, inductive strategy, and comparison strategy.
